The Monday Reset: Why a Midweek Escape to Portpatrick Might Be the Best Thing You Do This Autumn

It’s the last Monday in September. The mornings are darker, the inbox is fuller than it was on Friday, and the weekend already feels like a long time ago.

Here’s a small, slightly rebellious idea: stop waiting for the weekend.

A midweek break on the Rhins of Galloway isn’t about running away from the week. It’s about taking a bit of it back. The roads are quieter, the beaches are emptier, and there’s a very particular kind of calm that settles over southwest Scotland from Monday to Thursday in autumn.

Why midweek works so well in autumn

Weekends are for everyone. Midweek belongs to the people who planned ahead.

Once the school holidays are over, the Rhins slow right down. Portpatrick harbour gets its quiet back. Coastal paths that were busy in August are yours for the morning. Cafés have a free table by the window.

Autumn also brings the things we love most about this corner of Scotland: soft golden light in the late afternoon, big skies over the Irish Sea, and early nights that are made for a hot tub and a blanket.

Our breaks start from a minimum of two nights, so a Monday-to-Wednesday or Tuesday-to-Thursday stay is an easy way to give yourself a proper reset without taking the whole week off.

What a Monday reset at Coorie looks like

Arrive to warmth. Your private wood-fired hot tub is pre-heated for your arrival. Whatever the drive or the day was like, the first thing you do is sink into hot water with the countryside all around you.

Wake up slowly. No alarm and no commute. Just a coffee on the deck and the sound of wind in the grass.

Say good morning to Angus and Winston. Our resident Highland cows are two familiar faces in the fields, and they have absolutely no interest in your inbox. Every lodge has a Coorie cow care kit, so you can gently brush and feed them during your stay. It’s hard to think about spreadsheets while a Highland cow is leaning into a brush.

Try some hot and cold. The Wild Wellness Spa has an outdoor sauna, a cold plunge, an Epsom salt bath and a red-light therapy room. It’s all at your own pace, in whatever order suits you, set outdoors in the Rhins of Galloway countryside. You can add a session when you book, or ask before you arrive.

End the day outside. Light the fire pit, make s’mores, and watch a film under the stars at our outdoor cinema. Or just go back to the hot tub. Nobody’s judging.

Things to do nearby this autumn

Midweek is the perfect time to explore the Rhins without the crowds. A few of our autumn favourites:

  • Walk a wee bit of the Southern Upland Way. Scotland’s coast-to-coast long-distance route starts right here in Portpatrick and runs 212 miles to Cockburnspath on the east coast (Undiscovered Scotland). You don’t need to do all of it. The clifftop stretch out of the village is a brilliant way to blow away the Monday cobwebs.
  • Visit Logan Botanic Garden. Palm trees, tree ferns and giant gunnera on the Scottish coast, thanks to the mild Gulf Stream climate. The garden is open daily from 10am to 5pm until 15 November (closing at 4pm in November), and the Potting Shed café is open to everyone throughout the autumn (Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh).
  • Stand at Scotland’s most southerly point. The Mull of Galloway Lighthouse sits on a 260ft cliff, and you can climb its 115 steps for some of the best views in southwest Scotland (VisitScotland). The exhibition is open daily until 1 November. The lighthouse has extra openings from 12 to 18 October and from 26 October to 1 November, and there’s an engine and foghorn demonstration on Sunday 25 October (Mull of Galloway). It’s worth checking their Facebook page before you go, as the weather can affect opening.
  • Look up. Autumn’s longer nights are perfect for stargazing. Galloway Forest Park became the UK’s first Dark Sky Park in 2009 (BBC News), and on clear nights the skies over the Rhins can be spectacular too.

Who a midweek break suits

  • Couples who want time together without the weekend rush
  • Remote and hybrid workers who can move their week around a little
  • Friends who are overdue a catch-up that isn’t over a group chat
  • Anyone who has ever looked out of the window at 3pm on a Monday and thought, “I’d rather be somewhere else”

Plan your Monday reset

The week isn’t going anywhere, but you could be. Choose your lodge or geodome, pick your nights, and let the Rhins of Galloway do the rest.
