Angus and Winston: A Slower Kind of Coo-sday

Looking for Highland cows near Portpatrick? There are two rather familiar faces in our fields. Angus and Winston have become part of the way our little corner of southwest Scotland feels, even when they are simply getting on with their day.
They have a talent for making an otherwise busy Tuesday seem wonderfully unimportant.
A countryside meeting without an agenda
Watch a Highland cow for a moment and the usual sense of urgency begins to seem a little misplaced. There is grass to consider, a breeze moving through a long fringe and very little interest in anyone’s calendar.
Angus and Winston do not perform for the camera. Their quiet presence is what makes them special. Sometimes they are close enough to admire from an appropriate viewing place. At other times they are elsewhere in the field, following their own routine.
That is part of life here. Animal sightings are never a guaranteed appointment.
Why Highland cattle belong to the Scottish landscape
Their sweeping horns and long coats are instantly recognisable, yet there is more to Highland cattle than their appearance. The Highland Cattle Society’s guide to the breed explains the heritage of these hardy animals and their long relationship with Scottish upland life.
Seeing Angus and Winston in the landscape adds something no decorative detail could quite replace. They are living reminders that a countryside stay takes place within a working, changing natural environment.
Give yourself time to notice the smaller things
Perhaps you will see the boys during a gentle wander. Perhaps the better memory will be the soft light on the field or the sound of wind outside your accommodation.
Our earlier guide to the Highland cow experience at Coorie shares more about our much-loved residents. Please follow any on-site animal guidance and never assume that feeding, touching or entering an animal area is permitted without staff direction.
And then, back to your own cosy corner
Angus and Winston may draw your eye towards the fields, but your stay continues with the comforts waiting indoors. At Coorie, our lodges and geodomes are designed for relaxed evenings, considered details and time away from the usual rush.
The coos are not the whole story. They are one lovely piece of it.
