Glamping in Dumfries and Galloway: A Guide to Every Style of Stay

Glamping in Dumfries and Galloway has quietly become one of the most interesting stories in Scottish tourism, mostly because nobody tried to make it one. No coach tours, no queues, just 200 miles of coast, a forest park the size of a small country, and more and more good places to sleep outdoors in comfort.

If you are planning a trip here, it helps to know the different styles on offer, because “glamping” now covers everything from a field with a firepit to a geodome with a spa.

Every Style of Glamping in Dumfries and Galloway

This area has six main types of glamping, and each one suits a different kind of guest. So here is an honest map of the landscape, from the simplest to the most stylish.

1. Traditional Campsites in Dumfries and Galloway

At the classic end, for instance, sites like Balloch O’ Dee near Newton Stewart sit on the edge of the Galloway National Forest Park and keep a real campsite feel, with pitches, real campfires and a shared cooking area alongside some glamping stays. Listings on Campsites.co.uk show great reviews. Best for: campers, groups, dogs, people who want the fire more than the fittings.

2. Farm and Estate Pods in Galloway

Meanwhile, there are a lot of farms in this area, and many of them run their own glamping pods. Barnharrow Holiday Pods near Newton Stewart offers six dog-friendly luxury pods in the Wigtownshire countryside, while Craigend Farm on the edge of Dumfries runs pods close to Southerness beach and Drumlanrig Castle. Best for: value, countryside quiet, easy access from the English border.

3. Estates With Activities on Site

In addition, Hensol Estate Holidays near Castle Douglas sits on a private estate on the edge of Galloway Forest Park, with river walks, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding you can book on site alongside cottages and pitches. Best for: active families and water sports.

4. Hot Tub Pods in Dumfries and Galloway

This is, in fact, the fastest-growing type. The Galloway Steading just outside Glenluce offers wooden luxury pods with hot tubs near Wigtownshire golf course, and gets great reviews on Campsites.co.uk. Domes by the Sea overlooks Kirkcudbright Bay with geodomes and pods where you do your own cooking, and Laird Lodges offers pods with private covered hot tubs. Best for: couples who want the tub without the campsite.

5. Weddings, Events and Larger Venues

In some cases, though, one business covers more than one type of stay. GG’s Yard and Sea View Snugs near Gatehouse of Fleet are now part of the Laggan group, along with a hotel and other places to stay, as DGWGO reported and Laggan’s own site sets out. Best for: weddings, celebrations and larger parties.

6. Design-Led Wellness Retreats Near Portpatrick, Galloway

Finally, there is the newest type, and where we sit. Here, Coorie Retreats near Portpatrick has six design-led lodges and geodomes, each with a private wood-fired hot tub, plus a Wild Wellness Spa with a sauna, cold plunge pool, Epsom salt bath, copper rainfall shower and red light room, an outdoor cinema, and two resident Highland cows in the fields nearby. Best for: couples and small groups who want the wellness side to be the main reason for their trip, not just an extra.

Choosing Your Style of Glamping in Dumfries and Galloway

Whether you like the coast or the forest, glamping in Dumfries and Galloway now covers everything from campsites to design-led wellness retreats. So before you book, it helps to think through a few questions:

  • Coast or forest? The Rhins of Galloway and Kirkcudbright coast for sea; Newton Stewart and Castle Douglas for forest and lochs.
  • Private or shared facilities? Check whether the hot tub and bathroom are just for you.
  • Dogs? Most sites here are dog-friendly, but the rules differ. Ours are on our dog-friendly page.
  • What is actually included? Firewood, hot tub heating, hampers and linen are very different from site to site. Ours are listed on our facilities page.
