Dog-Friendly Glamping in Galloway: What to Look For and What to Bring
The dog gets out of the boot first, every time. There is a stretch, a yawn, a long sniff at the field, and then he is walking ahead of you up the path to the lodge before you have even shut the car door. That is the moment most owners realise the trip is working. The dog does not need an explanation. He just gets it.
The whole lodge at Clyde Croft was designed with the dog as a guest, not as a tolerated extra. Dog-friendly glamping in Galloway is often more about whether dogs are technically allowed than whether the place was actually built for them. We took a different angle. This is what to look for, what to bring, and how Clyde Croft handles the rest.
Key Notes
- Galloway has more accessible off-lead beaches than any other region in southern Scotland. Killantringan Beach is a 25-minute walk from Coorie.
- Dog-friendly does not always mean dog built. Look for lodges with hard floors, fenced outdoor space, and a hot tub setup that works with wet paws.
- Two dogs are welcome at Clyde Croft as standard with no extra charge for the second. Larger groups, please get in touch first.
- Midweek in shoulder season starts from around £290 per night. The best value window of the year.
What “Dog-Friendly” Means at a Glamping Lodge
The phrase is doing a lot of work. Some sites mean a single dog accepted on a £50 supplement and not allowed in the bedroom. Others, like Clyde Croft, mean the entire unit was set up around the assumption that a dog is part of the booking.
There are five things worth checking before you commit to any lodge. Hard floors throughout, because carpet and dogs do not mix after a coastal walk. A back door that opens directly to a fully fenced area, so there is no sprint across open land to intercept a bolting spaniel. A bed for the dog by the wood burner, included, because owners should not have to bring everything themselves.
A contained outdoor space where the dog can be off lead without a recall battle. And a hot tub setup where the dog can be on the deck nearby while you are in the water. Clyde Croft meets all five. Most places that call themselves dog friendly meet one or two.
What Coorie’s Clyde Croft Includes Specifically
Every unit at Coorie is comfortable. Clyde Croft is the one we built with the dog in mind.
The dog gets a welcome box on arrival. A treat bag from a Stranraer baker who makes dog biscuits, a poo bag dispenser, and a numbered tag with our number on it in case anyone goes adventuring. The floors are engineered oak throughout with rugs you can shake out. Easy to clean and easy to manage after a wet walk.
The lodge plot is a third of an acre, stock fenced. The dog can be off lead in the immediate surrounds without any escape risk. Inside, all the lodge amenities are there: outdoor cinema, hot tub, pizza oven, Ninja smoke grill, all configured to work with a dog around.
On the kitchen table you will find a printed sheet with the four best dog walks within twenty minutes, with terrain notes covering puppies, older dogs, beach and woodland. There is also a welcome box of local produce for the humans. The dog does not get everything.
The Walks That Make a Galloway Dog Trip
Galloway is exceptional for dogs not because of one walk but because of what is available within a short drive of the lodge in every direction. The off lead access here is some of the best in the UK.
Killantringan headland is a 25-minute walk from Coorie along a coastal path that ends at a lighthouse. Dogs off lead through most of it, on lead for the sheep section at the far end. The smell is half gorse, half salt. Dogs come back from this one genuinely tired.
The Mull of Galloway is about 40 minutes south. Dramatic cliffs, accessible paths, and Scotland’s southernmost point. Fewer dogs on the trail, which makes it the right choice for owners with a dog that finds other dogs difficult at close range.
Dunskey Castle ruin is a 15 minute drive from the lodge. Coastal cliff path, the ruin itself, and a circular route of around 90 minutes. Spaniels in particular seem to rate this one.
Galloway Forest dark sky trails are about an hour inland. Marked walking trails through pine forest with real canopy shelter on wet days. Avoid June to September if your dog struggles with midges.
Is Dog-Friendly Glamping Right for Your Dog?
Not every dog enjoys a glamping holiday. This is worth being honest about before you book.
Confident, sociable dogs who travel well and sleep happily in unfamiliar settings will thrive at Coorie. Senior dogs often do especially well. A short morning walk, a long doze by the wood burner, a slower afternoon walk, dinner, sleep. Five days at Coorie does more for an older dog than two months of city walks.
Puppies under six months are a less obvious fit. Recall is often not there yet and the new environment can be too stimulating to sleep well. Wait until eight or nine months and the trip will be considerably better for both of you.
Highly reactive dogs are worth thinking about carefully. The field next door has Highland cows. We brief every guest at check in and the path to Killantringan avoids the cattle entirely, but if livestock makes your dog difficult to manage, it is worth being honest with yourself before you arrive
“He hasn’t slept like that in two years.”

The Things Dog Friendly Sites Don’t Tell You
Most lodge listings skip this part entirely. These are what to actually pack and plan for.
Night one is the hardest. Even the most confident dogs can find a new place a bit unsettling. It is the sounds, the wind, the cows, and the unfamiliar quiet where the usual hum of home should be. Bring their own bed if you can and an unwashed t-shirt of yours to leave beside it. Do not be surprised if there is a 3am wander about. Night two is usually much easier.
You will have a wet dog. Galloway is a wet country. At Clyde Croft there is a covered porch with a dog towel rack and a coir mat that does not shred. A microfibre dog drying coat is the single most useful thing you can bring. None of the other guests will be surprised you have one.
The hot tub needs a plan. The hot tub is for humans. The dog usually wants to be wherever you are. The covered deck means the dog can be right there while you are in. A long lead clipped to the deck rail solves the problem of the dog deciding to join you.
Tick season is very real here, usually from May through to September, especially anywhere with sheep and bracken. It is worth using a vet recommended treatment before you arrive and checking your dog each evening. There is a tick remover in the welcome box so you do not need to bring one with you.
Is Dog-Friendly Glamping in Galloway Worth It?
Yes, with the right lodge and the right dog.
Clyde Croft midweek in shoulder season is the strongest value of the year at around £290 a night including the dog, with the walks at their quietest. Two nights is the right test for a first trip. Most owners book three the second time round. A growing number of guests book the same week every year. The dog remembers it. Genuinely. The lodge is a better stay for being built around a dog, not a worse one. No carpet to worry about, a field that acts as a noise buffer, and Galloway’s off lead access on the doorstep. The Wild Wellness Spa is there for the humans when one of you wants an hour away. The rest of the time, the dog sets the pace.

Reserve Your LodgeFrequently Asked Questions
How many dogs can stay at Clyde Croft?
Two dogs are welcome as standard with no extra charge for the second. Three or more, please get in touch before booking. Larger and working breeds are no problem so long as they are not livestock reactive.
Are the Highland cows safe to walk past with a dog?
Yes, on a short lead. Angus and Winston live in the field opposite the lodges and are unbothered by dogs walking past calmly. A barking or pulling dog will make them move away. The path to Killantringan goes nowhere near them, so for a proper off lead run, head straight there.
Are dogs allowed at the Wild Wellness Spa?
Dogs are not allowed inside the spa building. Most guests with dogs use the lodge hot tub and either skip the spa or book spa slots while one of the party stays at the lodge. We can hold a timed slot if it helps you plan the day.
What is the dog policy on the beach?
Most local beaches allow dogs off lead year round. Portpatrick main beach has a small seasonal restriction in July and August. Killantringan is unrestricted.
A Note From Galloway
Galloway does something to dogs that cities simply cannot. The space, the smell, the quiet, the kind of tired that comes from a real walk rather than a pavement loop around the block. Most owners notice it by day two. The dog settles, the routine takes hold, and the lodge stops feeling unfamiliar. It starts feeling like a place he belongs.
Clyde Croft was built for exactly that. Not as a lodge that happens to accept dogs but as a place where the dog is as much a guest as you are. If you have been waiting for the right trip to bring him, this is it. May and June dates are still open. Come and let him out of the boot.
